Born in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, Soren LaRue likes to refer to himself as a pioneer when it comes to his music production work. His music is nothing close to cookie-cutter when it comes to specific genres. Even when DJing, he has a hard time staying inside one sound. Each piece of music seems to incorporate two or more styles of music. Whether the track is extremely emotion and raw, or full of beeps and glitches, each track is usually hybrid in nature. To Soren, putting yourself in a box when it comes to music, just stifles the creative process. It’s all about the freedom to move and just produce what you feel.
Starting in the early year of 1992 as a DJ, Soren has been drenched in music since the tender age of 11 years old. Being classically trained in piano and guitar, his earliest electronic production work began in 1997. It wasn't until 2003 that his first single EP release, called “Innerchild,” would receive a decent amount of exposure. The song sparked a remix contest on Sony’s Acidplanet.com, and ended up becoming a staple song in one of Esurance.com’s television commercials known as “The Lost Reel.” The release received over 430 remixes total and was Soren’s first real jump into the Dance community.
For the next few years, LaRue struggled trying to find that “sound” that defined him. Looking for a solution, he ended up at Bellarmine University trying to gather knowledge in music theory and sound manipulation. It wasn’t until a year or two after his graduation, that he was able to take all his new-found knowledge and actually hone it into a style all his own. Trying to break away from a world revolving around over-used samples, he began designing sounds in various virtual synthesizers including Reason’s famed Thor.
Soren soon after returned to Bellarmine University, this time not as a student, but as an instructor in the Music Technology department. LaRue was teaching various DAW programs, audio recording, and was responsible for the many recordings the University performed. Between the sound design, production work, audio mastering and teaching schedule, Soren was spending a good deal of time learning the fine art of audio mastering. Even traveling half way around the United States to work with one of Roy Orbison’s engineers, he was able to acquire the knowledge necessary to help him achieve his goals. He aspires to produce online tutorials to help would-be and aspiring producers, as well as his college students, to gain the knowledge they need to start a solid foundation.
Beyond college, Soren continued his Music Technology education by becoming a Certified Pro Tools Operator in Nashville, Tennessee. Concerned with safe-guarding his own productions and managing his career, he began taking classes at Berklee College of Music, where he received a certification in Music Business. Soren finally started what he feels is his next phase of life by starting on his Masters program in Music Technology at IUPUI. He should complete his Masters of Science in Music Technology by the end of 2011.
Soren’s broad sound and diverse styles had caused him to take on different monikers throughout his career. Releasing music under several alias’ on respected labels such as Peak Hour Music, System Recordings, Source of Gravity, NOSI Music, Quarterlife Records NYC, SinSation Sound, Protium Music, Intermission Ltd, Televisionary Records, Visionary Mindz Recrodings, Beat My Drum Records, and XDN. He’s on a mission to burn his name in the top charting tracks of the millennium. With several releases still pending and in cue for the year, LaRue is already looking to the next year as his year to shine.
Beyond his Soren LaRue moniker, he has begun sprouting new styles and creating music under other names such as Gruvbot, and Duyukta (with Richard Burchard). Collaborative projects are underway with several artists such as: Thee-O, Angel Alanis, DJ Diamond, Nicky Twist, Indicant, Spaio, Benman, Dose the Alien (aka Andrew Kirtcher), The Giver, and Christian Scott. He currently works along side vocalists such as Miss Blenna, Benman and Lea Luna - with whom a remix contest is underway on Sony's www.acidplanet.com through the month of June, 2010 for their collaborative song called "Mo' Money."
For Soren LaRue, it’s been a long road, with more days sitting inside a studio grinding away on the computer producing music, than DJing and touring gigs. He would say it’s time well spent, but looks forward to the upcoming years when he will be making his presence more known on the stages and DJ booths, playing live to the masses, and leaving his mark on the Dance community. For LaRue, the best years are yet to come, in the studio, inside the DJ booth, and in his teaching career.
